Foam Board vs. Vinyl for Convention Walls
When to use rigid foam board and when to use applied vinyl for trade-show and convention walls.
On convention walls you'll hear both 'foam board' and 'vinyl' — they solve different problems, and good booths often use both. Here's when each makes sense.
Applied vinyl: seamless and direct
Vinyl applies directly to a wall surface — drywall, laminate or glass — for a smooth, seamless, large-format look, including walls up to 40 feet. It's ideal when you're branding an existing structure.
Foam board: rigid and freestanding
Rigid foam board panels are printed graphics on a lightweight stiff substrate — great for freestanding signage, headers, dimensional elements and surfaces you don't want to apply directly to. We've combined foam board and vinyl on jobs like Mandalay Bay and Resorts World.
Using both
Most polished booths mix them: vinyl for the big seamless wall fields, foam board for crisp freestanding signage and structure. We'll recommend the right mix for your booth and budget.

Frequently asked
Should I use foam board or vinyl for my booth?
Vinyl is best for seamless large-format coverage applied to walls (up to 40 ft); foam board is best for rigid, freestanding signage and dimensional elements. Many booths use both — we'll recommend the right mix.
Can you do both foam board and vinyl on one booth?
Yes — we routinely combine applied vinyl wall fields with rigid foam-board signage, as on our Mandalay Bay and Resorts World convention installs.
